Parents' letter

Senior School

It is with enthusiasm that I’m writing to introduce myself as your new International Vice Principal and Head of Senior School.  I have worked in education for the past 23 years, including 17 years at Haileybury College Australia, having been a Deputy Head of Campus, Head of Department and Physics and Chemistry classroom teacher. I am excited and honoured to be a part of your child's senior school education and look forward to the opportunity to work alongside our Principal, Robert Erwin, and all our dedicated staff who are already hard at work in 2016.

This Newsletter is designed to provide students and parents with information about recent developments at the Haileybury Senior School, to highlight forthcoming activities and events, and to provide guidance on a number of important senior school related matters.

During my first week, I have had many interactions with teachers and students. It was pleasing to observe first-hand many classrooms providing focused and rigorous instruction focused on high expectations.

During our senior school assembly, held on 2 December, Zhang (Johnny) Jingchen and Jia (Amy) Wenxinwere inducted as the Captains of Haileybury International School Tianjin. We also had Wu (Leo) Yuqi and Liu (Krystal) Tiancong inducted as our Vice Captains of the school. I look forward to working closely with them for the remaining part of the school year and wish them success in their leadership endeavours.

A Year 10 Parent Information session was held last week where our International Senior School Program was explained. The international Senior School Program is a three-year program that made up of a pre-VCE Year (Year 10) and two VCE Years (Years 11 and 12), when students will be registered as VCE students in Australia.  It is important to note that promotion to the VCE Years depends upon satisfactory completion of the Pre-VCE Year.

Teaching and Learning

As part of our professional development model at the senior school I have been spending time in the classroom observing teachers and providing feedback on their lessons. This is proving to be a great learning tool for all our staff as there is a great deal of teaching growth occurring. We will look to develop this model as the year progresses. Examination week for our Year 10 and Year 11 students will occur on Monday 19 to Friday 23 December. We will send a letter to go home to all parents next week. Our Year 12 students will have normal classes during this week.

Mr Brendan Pateman

Head of Teaching & Learning

The past week has been a busy week for sport in Haileybury. Our U16 Badminton team, led by coaches Gum and Cao had a hugely successful day at the B.A.S.E. Tournament. Jimmy Zhong won a silver medal, our girl’s doubles team also won a silver. In the girl’s singles, Sophie Gu won bronze and our boys doubles team also brought home the bronze. The team narrowly missed out to Huijia School on winning the overall team prize. In U19 Basketball, we also had an action-packed week. On Tuesday and Thursday our boy’s and girl’s teams were victorious home and away to St. Paul’s American school. The boys also competed well in the Keystone Academy Invitational on Sunday afternoon. This weekend, both our boys and girl’s teams will participate in the U19 B.A.S.E tournament.

The Activities Program has grown so much over the last few months, I would like to take the opportunity to highlight the new and exciting classes we have started recently called Calligraphy. This course, led by Ms. Sylvia Wu, is designed for beginners interested in learning traditional Chinese calligraphy techniques. Students started by learning more about the historical importance of calligraphy before trying it out for themselves. The class is a great chance for students to learn more about traditional Chinese crafts.

Our first Christmas Carnival is coming up, from 12 to 15 December, with several events scheduled over the week including a homeroom decorating contest, casual clothes day, a talent show and a gift exchange. With this in mind, our Social Service Club will raise money and collect gifts for a local orphanage. We ask that all donations be given by Monday, December 19th. Please see Ms. Helen Zhang or Ms. Antonette Gum for more information.
