HIST PRIMARY CAMPUS NEWS and INFORMATION
Bulletin 14, Week 9, Semester 2, 2017-18
Dear primary school parents and families,
It has been another fruitful and exciting two weeks at the primary school in Tianjin. Safety is paramount at Haileybury and staff and students in the primary school continually undertake training in this area. On Friday the 14th of April, the foundation for the protection of girls organized three public lectures at our school which were aimed at raising public awareness concerning the welfare and rights of girls. In our society, girls are usually more vulnerable than boys so it is important that girls learn how to protect themselves. Regardless of gender, all students gained valuable insights into this important topic and they also each received a colorful little booklet which summarized what they heard. We wish to thank the presenters for giving up their time to teach our children valuable lessons about safety. May we not only learn how to protect ourselves, but may we also help others when we have the power to do so. Fire disasters cause the deaths of many Chinese people every year. Moreover, many billions of yuan are also lost due to fire damage each year. On the 20th of April, there was a fire drill in the dormitory buildings. The whole school participated in this fire drill and it only took around 5 minutes for the whole school to evacuate onto the school oval. It was pleasing to see many students taking the fire drill seriously as they were seen running to the evacuation location with wet towels on their noses. We hope we never have to experience a serious disaster at our school but with regular disaster prevention lectures and drills taking place at our school each year, we trust our school will be ready when disaster strikes.

Teachers have been working diligently in order to prepare students for their mid-semester exams. Leading up to the examinations, students completed revision tasks and worksheets across the core subjects of English, Chinese and Mathematics. Like the warmer weather outside, students have been feeling the heat from the pressure of these exams. Examinations started on Thursday the 26th with two English examinations in the morning followed by Chinese and Mathematics examinations on Friday. Judging from the smiles from many faces after the exams, it is safe to say that many students performed exceptionally well. You will receive your child’s academic reports and grades soon so keep your eyes open for them. On the 28th of April, the primary school held an Australian themed sports carnival together with middle school and the Gao Kao department. Primary school students chose Australian animal mascots to represent their classes while the middle school was represented by Australian cities. Before the sports carnival, a pompous opening ceremony was orchestrated. Students held class banners which were drawn in art class and marched like tin soldiers on the day. Various running races, relays, athletic events and games were held on the day. It was great to see so many students enjoying themselves and participating in the many events on offer. Academic knowledge is important but physical power and skill also have their value in our society so it is important that students excel not only in their textbooks but also on the field.

Our primary school basketball team travelled to Keystone International School on the 14th of April to participate in an under 14 basketball tournament which involved six international schools. The six schools were SMIC, Keystone, Hope International, Huijia, Daystar and Haileybury. Despite playing against opponents who were up to two years older, our team did not shy away from the challenge. We managed to win one of our games but as expected, we lost three games. Star players on the day included Hank, Lochlyn, Johan and Jack. Special thanks must also go to Mr. Fang who coached the boys on the day as well as Mr. Sun who accompanied and guided the boys as well. The boys learnt many valuable lessons on the day concerning the game of basketball. Our students also matured mentally as they were competing against opponents who were much older. Furthermore, our students also learnt the importance of sportsmanship and playing together as a team on the day. We hope to participate in more interschool sport competitions in the future.

The second round of the CCTV Star of Outlook competition was held at our school on the 24th of April. A total of 34 students from the primary school participated in the morning’s competition as all students who entered in the first round progressed onto the second round. This time students had to give an impromptu speech on one of the three selected topics. The three topics were sports, friends and family. Special commendations must to all the students who took the time to prepare on the three topics. Many students spoke fluently and confidently answered the assessors’ questions. Many thanks must also go to their English teachers who used their own free time to edit speeches and train students. We are encouraged by the pleasing performances from this round and we are proud to announce that 26 of our primary school students have qualified into the third round which will be held on the 5th of May in Tianjin.
