Overview

The Careers and Pathways Counsellor (Acting Head of Careers & Pathways) is responsible for overseeing the Senior School pathway opportunities for students in Years 10, 11 and 12, including supporting students with subject selection and university selection and application processes.   
The Careers and Pathways Counsellor (Acting Head of Careers & Pathways) collaborates closely with the Vice Principal & Head of Senior School, Head of Teaching and Learning and the International Principal to support students through the delivery of tailored career guidance and support through the Senior School that includes education about International University options, prerequisites and application requirements. The Careers and Pathways Counsellor (Acting Head of Careers & Pathways) actively builds and maintains relationships with external stakeholders, specifically university representatives both in China and abroad.   

Resource and Relationship Management

• Build and maintain relationships and partnerships with universities abroad including Australia, UK, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore and their affiliated university offices in China.  
• Review and update information relating to university entry requirements regularly.   
• Communicate regularly with students, parents and the wider community.  
• Provide opportunity and the relevant information for students and families to attend University Information sessions online, or in person with particular focus on in person events in Beijing and Tianjin. 
• Coordinate university visits and presentations. 
• Coordinate and manage the University and Subject Selection Expo. 
• Connect, collaborate and network with Careers and Pathways Counsellors at like schools in 
Beijing and Tianjin. 
• Ensure that Haileybury is actively represented at Careers and University events in the region. 
• Ensure that the Senior School Leadership Team are advised regarding international developments regarding universities and Higher Education.

 

Careers Curriculum Responsibilities 

• Oversee the implementation of and continued development of the Careers Curriculum for Years 9 to 12. 
• Build in opportunities for goal setting, reflection and review with students.  
• Deliver regular information sessions for students in the Senior School as required. 
• Manage and oversee the Year 10 Mock Interviews. 
• Develop and review the Year 10 Careers booklet with support of the Head of Pathways. 
• Consult and provide feedback on student subject selection and requests for subject change. 
• Lead training on writing references for university destinations. 

 

Individualised Student Support  
• Be expert in global university applications, including but not limited to UK, US, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, and Australia. 
• Develop and maintain a schedule for 1:1 meetings with Year 11 and 12 Senior School students and their parents that ensures regular review of student pathway plans. 
• Manage student profile information in a systematic manner that ensures accurate, personalised advice can be shared with students and families as required. 
• Support students with application for university entry and specific information.   
• Ensure all student applications are of a high quality, and to support the writing of statements, collation of essays etc., and ensure they are sent by the published deadlines.  
• Support VTAC applications and the receipt of ATAR results and certificates.

 

Administrative Responsibilities

• Maintain a well organised calendar of events, presentations, external engagements and 
individual student and parent meetings.  
• Manage student data in relation to VCAA, ATAR and University applications for all destinations.  
• Produce regular dynamic University Pathways updates to parents, students and staff. 
• Manage the reference writing process for staff putting together university references for all university applications. 
• Ensure that the subject teachers and academic staff are guided and supported to meet 
deadlines for writing references. 
• Collaborate with the schools Marketing department to promote student university offers and placements.

 

Leadership

• Lead the Pathways team to ensure support is given as required to students, parents and teachers. • Contribute to the Professional Learning offerings for staff within the school.
• Model a positive attitude that promotes student engagement and success in pathways planning.
• Collaborate with the Heads of Department towards the strategic direction of the School.
• Participate in curriculum information events and speak with parents as required.
• Collaborate with key staff at Haileybury in Melbourne and keep up-to-date with developments relating to ATAR, VCAA and Australian Visa requirements.
• Share information with the School Leadership Team as it concerns University Pathways.

 

Personal & Professional qualities

• Relevant Careers, Pathways or University guidance experience. 
• Strong understanding and knowledge of a range of university sectors. 
• Bilingual Mandarin and English (preferred). 
• Highly organised, energetic, creative and innovative. 
• Excellent oral, written and electronic communication skills.  
• Sensitivity to the needs of working across cultures in an international setting.  
• A mature and respectful approach to all interpersonal dealings and an ability to work collaboratively with teaching and non-teaching staff, and with students. 

 

Academic qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related field.
• Postgraduate qualifications considered highly favourable.
