Overview

The Head of STEM plays a key role in delivering a dynamic and coordinated STEM program across Years 1 – 12. The Head of STEM works collaboratively with the International Principal and key staff in both the Senior and Junior Schools to plan and implement systems that facilitate engagement with STEM based programs both within the core curriculum and as cocurricular offerings. The Head of STEM assumes the responsibility to ensure ongoing curriculum development, resource management and coordination of STEM learning centres, programs and activities across the Junior and Senior schools.
Together with our team of Department Heads, the Head of STEM works collaboratively to collectively optimise student achievement and improve the quality of teaching and learning across the Senior and Junior Schools. Below are the key responsibilities of the position, however, are not exclusive and will involve the Head of STEM responding to the needs of the school and programs.

Teaching & Learning

• Demonstrate high standards of teaching and a strong working understanding of current pedagogical approaches within the field of STEM
• Communicate, apply and share contemporary educational research, theory and practice in pedagogy, assessment and reporting in relation to teaching and learning in STEM
• Teach within the Science Department across the school
• Collaboratively delivery learning experiences to students within the curriculum
• Plan and deliver cocurricular STEM offerings for students from Year 1 - 12

Curriculum Responsibilities

• Liaise closely with the Head of Science and Head of Mathematics to ensure effective STEM teaching strategies are being utilised within their departments
• Collaborate with Junior School and Senior School teachers to ensure authentic and systematic STEM curriculum integration
• Develop a cohesive program of cocurricular STEM based activities across the school.
• Plan and oversee the professional learning program and opportunities of all staff involved in the STEM program.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Manage the STEM resources in the school library.
• Coordinate the resourcing and purchasing of equipment, general supplies and resources that are required to support the STEM programs.
• Develop, administer and communicate a calendar of STEM programs, including external camps and competitions.
• Maintain and develop the STEM Astronomy program.
• Design and develop initiatives to promote STEM across year levels.
• Develop connections with the network of STEM educators in similar settings.
• Communicate relevant STEM information to students, staff, and parents in an effective and timely manner, including PPT presentations and academic extension activities.
• Organise and oversee STEM competitions and excursion programs.
• Share student success stories with the Head of Teaching and Learning and wider community

Co-curricular and Community

• Support the aims and ethos of the School
• Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance
• Attend and contribute to meetings for subject, faculty and staff and parent-teacher meetings, school events, Open Day, excursions, assemblies and services,
• Actively participate in the School’s co-curricular program
• Undertake rostered supervisory duties outside of the classroom and exercise responsibility for the welfare of students
• Supervise student teachers as required
• Act as a mentor for staff members as required

Leadership

• Develop and monitor the quality of STEM programs across sub-schools
• Collaborate with staff to develop programs within the whole school STEM program
• Work effectively with the Junior School and Senior School leadership teams to ensure smooth running of the STEM program.
• Lead the development of innovative, cross-disciplinary problem-solving focused STEM programs that supports and enhances the existing classroom curriculum of Primary School, Middle School and Year 10 in Senior School.
• Promote STEM in the school community via STEM events, community newsletters, WeChat articles and presentations to key stake holders.
• Contribute to the Professional Learning offerings for staff within the school
• Model a positive attitude that promotes student engagement and success in STEM
• Collaborate with the Heads of Department towards the strategic direction of the School
• Participate in curriculum information events and speak with parents as required

Academic qualifications
• Registration as a teacher in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, Eire, the USA or equivalent internationally recognised teacher registration.
• Relevant undergraduate degree in teaching
• Postgraduate and additional academic qualifications will be favourably considered
• Experience preferred with “STEM” and Physics teaching background

In addition to the above, the ideal candidate will possess the following:

• Minimum of Bachelors degree, with postgraduate qualifications considered highly favourably.
• Education/teacher qualifications and registration or ability to obtain registration.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate, apply and share contemporary educational research, theory and practice in pedagogy, assessment and reporting in STEM
• The ability to collaborate and build effective collaborative teams
• Appreciation of and willingness to work within the complexities of the current geopolitical environment.
