HAILEYBURY PRIMARY CAMPUS NEWS and INFORMATION
Bulletin 1, September Edition, 2020-2021
Dear primary school parents and families,
In the warm sunshine, we start school! Seeing the lovely smiling faces of the students, the teachers were very excited. Students and teachers work together at the start of the new semester to study hard and better ourselves.
On January 21, 1985, the ninth session of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress made a resolution to make September 10 of every year Teacher's Day in China. Respecting teachers and valuing education are a fine tradition in China. As early as the Western Zhou Dynasty in the 11th century B.C., it was proposed that "students should serve their teachers and respect their father". Confucius, an ancient great educator, left behind a series of famous sayings, such as "teach without discrimination", "review the past and know new", "learn while learning". The teacher who preaches, teaches and dispels doubts is praised by the Chinese as the engineer of human soul. On the occasion of the 36th teacher's day, students from the primary school department presented their own songs to express their gratitude to the teachers.
Teaching and research activities are methods to improve the quality of teaching. Persisting in teaching and research activities for a long time is conducive to the timely transmission of new teaching information, the promotion of teaching experience, the deepening of teaching reform, and the improvement of the overall quality of teachers. Haileybury attaches importance to teaching and research activities as normal work to provide a platform for teachers to exchange and learn. After the beginning of school, our primary school department has held a series of open classes, teaching and research activities as well as professional learning and development workshops. [YG1] Through the normal teaching and research activities and open classes, we can improve the teaching ability and provide students with a better class.
It is a tradition of our primary school to wrap our new books with brown paper covers. The biggest significance of book cover is to protect books. Books are used every day, and they are easily dirtied. Wrapping book in covers is done every new semester. Letting children create book covers lets them know how to cherish everything. There is also an intention for students to learn good behaviors by helping them wrap the books themselves. It is not just about wrapping book covers. Through this action, children can learn to do everything carefully and seriously. Good habits are often formed from small things.
After the beginning of school, students from the primary school department held an online student union campaign. The students who participated in the election were broadcast to each class through Tencent conference mode, and then the students selected their own candidates for prefect and student union secretary. The school provides opportunities for all students to exert themselves. Participating in the student union election campaign can help students enhance their courage, self-confidence, eloquence, abilities and experience. Whether it is an interview, the student union or the class committee students need courage to speak for themselves among competitors. If you have courage, you must have self-confidence. Go to the podium to give a speech and report. Slowly improve yourself, adjust yourself, and make progress little by little. This is the accumulation of self-confidence. Every week's regular meeting and the summary after the activity can exercise everyone's eloquence and writing, which undoubtedly helps them become eloquent. Both organizational ability and executive ability can be exercised in the family of the student union. The premise is to be active enough, take part in organizing various activities and be good at summarizing. As long as we stick to it and understand the significance of each activity from planning to summary, it will bring great benefits to our future life.
Every Friday morning, there is an English assembly at Haileybury. In the assembly, we can learn many things. We learned more about lives of students from other countries and a moral story. For the past two weeks, we were lucky to have Mr. Nathan Williamson and Ms. Cara Suski bringing us the fun and meaningful assembly through VooV.
Next, let's get to know some of our English teachers of our primary school.
Hello, my name is Nathan Williamson (Mr. W) and I have been working at Haileybury for 4 years. My background is in education. My degree is in Early Childhood and Primary education. I am the lower primary school coordinator (Years 1-3) and I have enjoyed my time teaching students at Haileybury. Right now, I am teaching years 1 to 3 and it great to see how the students develop their learning of English. I do look scary to some of the students, but I am a very nice person. Thank you, Mr. W.
Hello everyone, my name is Mr. Fang and I have been teaching at Haileybury since 2014. This year is my 7th year at this school. I have taught in middle school and senior school but I have spent the majority of my tenure in the primary school. I have enjoyed seeing students grow in their English abilities through their own hard work and the teacher’s guidance. Some of my past students have graduated from the school and have gained enrollment into foreign universities such as Australia. I was born in Taiwan but I spent 25 years of my life in Australia where I gained a teaching degree from the University of Western Australia. I believe English competency is important in our global milieu because it has become the lingua franca or common language of the world. Thank you, Mr. Fang.
Hi, everyone. I am Mr. Rosenfield. I graduated from the University of Illinois of Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Developmental Psychology and a minor in history. I am now in my third year at Haileybury. I am teaching year 5 this year. I have a lot of teaching experience. I have taught ESL English for 10 years in South Korea. My strength is that I can teach quite complex material in clear, simple and natural terms. I also believe in the importance of a sense of humor and I try to involve my interest in history and geography into my courses.
My name is Mr. Ricky Linares and this is my first year in Haileybury. I graduated from a University in Florida (USA), where I got my bachelor’s degree in Primary Education with emphasis in Children social and moral development. I have been teaching English as a second language for several years.
I have been living in China for three years and I have had the opportunity to work for one year as a University teacher, preparing students for their future studies abroad and IELTS, as well as two years as a Primary teacher. I am passionate about languages; besides English, I speak three more languages. I consider that all these experiences have helped me to build the skills and best practices for language acquisition. I am excited to start a new path in Haileybury and look forward to passing on my love for languages to the students.
Thank you for all your hard work and hope you have a great day.
My name is Ms. Mary Elizabeth Gilmore; however, everyone calls me Beth. I’m known by the students as Ms. Beth. I teach grades 1 through 3 at Haileybury, and I am a new teacher here. I have already enjoyed my time with these students, and I am certain we are going to have a wonderful year together.
My background is teaching medical skills to college students, teaching adults and grades 1 through 12 ESL students. I have been told by many of my students that my strengths are teaching students correct pronunciation and grammar. I look forward to the students flourishing in their English skills this year.
Here is an introduction of Heli from Year 6. Heli has been a wonderful student. Let’s know more about her through her writing.
I am Heli, a beautiful and generous girl, salty and sweet, full of confidence. I like dancing, swimming and table tennis. I am enchanted by the beautiful melody and soft movements when I dance; The spray from swimming fills me with passion; The orderly pace and swinging of the racket in table tennis make me have high morale. I also like reading, especially mystery novels, I really do! I have studied and lived in Haileybury for one year. What attracts me most here is the green grass and international teaching configuration. This is my dream school.
I like lying on the lawn with my friends, listening to music and watching birds fly by the sky, which can relax my body and mind and relieve pressure. Haileybury has a beautiful environment, a united student community and a good relationship between teachers and students, which makes me feel as warm as my family and loved by my teachers no less than my parents. My favorite activity here is the annual Family Day. By this time we had forgotten our troubles, got rid of our unpleasantness, and talked freely and cheerfully; By this time, no teachers and students, no parents and elders, we are all friends!;By this time, the game was also put on the stage, the game of laughter, let me feel very happy!
Haileybury's class is full of charm. What impressed me most is the English class talking with the foreign teacher. I am fascinated by their teaching methods and enthusiasm: they carefully transmit knowledge to us in class, tell it carefully and deeply, but not boring, which make us open to accept, and sometimes they would tell us some jokes, so as to activate the atmosphere and inspire thinking. After class, the foreign teachers would chat with us, ask us about the effect of listening in class and problems, and answer questions for us the next day.
In this golden autumn, I became a member of the sixth grade in primary school. In this crucial semester, I set a goal for myself: In the study I will continue to work hard to keep the results among the top; In addition, I will improve my management ability, do a good job in the class and the Student union, be a teacher's right-hand man, and serve the students well. In terms of swimming, I hope to get systematic training, improve my level and join the school swimming team as soon as possible.
At the end of this bulletin, we have a story from Mr. Williamson. The name of the book is Mr. Smart’s Big Dog Book. Hope everyone can enjoy listening to the story and read more books at home.
文章的最后，欢迎Mr. Williamson 老师为我们带来一首英文绘本的朗读，书的名字是《Smart 先生的大狗》。希望大家喜欢这个故事，也希望大家能够坚持英语书籍的阅读。
